AI Business Justification Cheat-Sheet
AI Business Justification: Ten Questions to Ask First
Every week, another vendor tells you their product is AI-powered. However, adding AI to a solution is not automatically a good thing. A strong AI business justification proves the value. A weak one simply assumes it.
That is why SAM Charter has created The AI Justification Test. It is a free, two-page cheat-sheet you can drop straight into any business case.
Why your AI business justification needs a test
Most proposals describe what AI could do. Few ask what happens when it gets things wrong. As a result, organisations sign up to pricing they cannot cap, data exposure they did not plan for, and agents nobody is tracking.
Our cheat-sheet tackles this with ten plain questions. Each one comes with a clear good sign and a clear red flag. For example, it asks whether a simple rules engine could do the same job for less.
What the ten questions cover
The questions span the full lifecycle of an AI component:
- problem fit and the cost of being wrong
- a measured, non-AI baseline to compare against
- data rights and unit costs at scale
- accountability, drift and exit planning
- your regulatory and licensing position
- the identities and credentials AI agents can reach
In addition, four questions act as gates. A red flag on any of them stops the AI element, whatever the overall score. This stops a good average from hiding a fatal flaw.
Built on IT Asset Management experience
Two questions come straight from IT Asset Management practice. First, do the licence terms of your software allow AI or automated access? Second, is each AI agent registered and governed as an asset in its own right? Most AI checklists miss both.
