SWID Tags and AI Agent Management
SWID Tags and AI Agent Management: Build an AI Agent Registry That Keeps Pace With Your Agents
SWID Tags and AI Agent Management: AI agents now call APIs, touch data and even spawn agents of their own. However, most CMDB and SAM tools cannot show which agents exist, who owns them or what they may do. Moreover, regulators, auditors and boards are starting to ask for exactly that list. As a result, an AI agent registry has become an urgent priority for any organisation adopting agentic AI.
What the whitepaper covers
In this whitepaper, Rory Canavan of SAM Charter and Oleksiy Akimov of CaeliQ show you how to build one. Their approach repurposes ISO/IEC 19770-2 SWID tags, but not as a straight copy. Instead, they propose a two-layer model. First, a durable identity record, which ITAM owns, shows who an agent is and who answers for it. Second, a short-lived OAuth 2.1 credential, which IAM owns, controls what the agent may do right now. A single shared key, the agentId, joins the two. Because the model is platform-neutral, it works alongside tools such as ServiceNow AI Control Tower.
Treat every agent like a contractor
The paper also frames each agent as a contractor engagement. You engage it for a job, agree its scope and budget, and end the engagement when the work is done. If an agent spawns a sub-agent, that is subcontracting, with its own record and its own credential. Consequently, a familiar Joiners, Movers and Leavers process keeps your registry accurate, even as agents change.
